The issue of benzodiazepine overprescription is widespread, affecting millions of lives across the country and around the world. Over the past decade, benzodiazepine prescriptions have surged by nearly 30%, bringing with it a corresponding increase in addiction rates and overdose deaths. However, the risk is not limited to addiction. Extended use of benzodiazepines—even taken as prescribed—can lead to a condition known as Benzodiazepine-Induced Neurological Dysfunction (BIND).
Despite the seriousness of these consequences, many patients are prescribed these medications without full knowledge of the potential risks and long-term effects. Additionally, the current legislation does not adequately protect those suffering from BIND under the Americans with Disabilities Act, leaving many vulnerable and without recourse. This lack of informed consent and the absence of sufficient protective legislation forms the crux of our campaign, addressing the urgent need for a change in the way we handle benzodiazepine prescription.
The impact campaign for the film will help raise awareness about benzodiazepine overprescription, health risks, and safe tapering practices. We will advocate for informed consent legislation, protections for those suffering from Benzodiazepine-Induced Neurological Dysfunction (BIND), and responsible benzodiazepine prescribing with healthcare professionals. We will also offer opportunities for the public to support organizations and initiatives working to support those suffering from BIND and will expand the use of the Ashton Manual.
